Apple’s iOS 18 Could Be The ‘Biggest Update’ In iPhone History
Apple is planning a major overhaul to its mobile operating system with its upcoming iOS 18 update. According to Bloomberg’s reporter Mark Gurman, iOS 18 is expected to be “one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history.” The Cupertino giant will likely announce iOS 18 during the company’s annual WWDC event in June.
“I’m told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates – if not the biggest – in the company’s history. With that knowledge, Apple’s developers conference in June should be pretty exciting,” Gurman wrote in the subscriber-only Q&A section of his latest Power On newsletter.
He added that iOS 18 will give the iPhone a much-needed makeover that will “satisfy many longstanding requests from users, developers and regulators.”
While Gurman revealed that he would share more information about iOS 18 in the future, he has previously reported the features likely to be included in the iOS 18 update.
For instance, announced in November 2023, Apple would start integrating support for Rich Communication Standard (RCS) into its Messages app for iPhones in 2024, which would open up cross-platform features between iOS and Android phones.
Also, the tech giant is expected to bring enhanced use of generative (artificial intelligence) to iOS with its own large language model (LLM), making Siri smarter and more capable of handling complex tasks. The report added that the generative AI technology should improve both Siri and the Messages app in fielding questions and auto-completing sentences.
Besides these, Apple Music is expected to get new AI to make playlists and AI assistant tools in apps such as Keynote, Messages, and Xcode.
Since Apple hasn’t officially confirmed anything yet, it is advisable to wait to hear about iOS 18 during Apple’s upcoming annual WWDC in June.
